According to Charlotte Business Journal  - "Firethorne Country Club tops the list of private golf courses, with a slope rating of 147," making it the toughest private golf course in the Charlotte area. "The U.S.G.A. assigns slope ratings to show the relative difficulty of a course for the average player compared with the difficulty for an expert player." The Charlotte Business Journal also lists the following as the toughest private courses in terms of ranking in the Charlotte area:
